Hirn & Ei is an advanced ensemble work for four performers by Carola Bauckholt, composed in 2010-2011 for the Schlagquartett Kv?ln. Unusually, the piece dispenses with traditional instruments, focusing instead on subtle, rhythmically intricate sounds produced through movement and the manipulation of everyday materials, notably Gore-Tex jackets. Built on finely nuanced variations in articulation, the work explores the expressive potential of seemingly mundane swishing sounds, reflecting Bauckholt’s interest in perception and sonic detail. Created in close collaboration with the performers, it is closely tailored to their distinctive rhythmic and physical approach.
